Tomas drives in three as D-backs win series over Rockies: By the Numbers

When it rains, it pours.

The Arizona Diamondbacks’ offense came to life Tuesday in a blowout win, and it picked up right where it left off in Wednesday’s series finale against the Colorado Rockies.

The Rockies scored an unearned run off Arizona starter Josh Collmenter to open the game, but the D-backs responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

The score would stay the same until Arizona’s offense overwhelmed Colorado’s Jordan Lyles in the pitcher’s fifth inning of work. Back-to-back multi-RBI hits made for a five-run fifth inning, and a blowout was on from there.

Arizona added a couple of late runs before finishing with a 9-1 victory, winning the three-game series at Chase Field two games to one.

Despite an imperfect opening frame, Collmenter ended up having his second-best game of the season, going eight innings with five hits and one run (zero earned) allowed while striking out six. His record improved to 2-3 with the outing.

The two teams’ records are now the inverse of each other: Colorado dropped to 11-10, while Arizona improved to 10-11 in winning its second straight game.

Here’s a look at Wednesday’s blowout at Chase, by the numbers:

Relief pitcher Enrique Burgos was recently called up from Double-A Mobile, and he made his MLB debut for the Diamondbacks in the ninth inning Wednesday. The 24-year-old right hander did just fine in his first inning on a major league mound, inducing two groundouts and one flyout while throwing just eight pitches.

Perhaps the most impressive stat in Collmenter’s night was his zero walks allowed in eight innings pitched, the second straight start he’s failed to walk a batter. The 29-year-old right-hander, in fact, has only walked three batters all season in five starts. Collmenter threw 102 pitches in the win Wednesday, and he dropped his ERA from 3.65 to 2.76.

Left fielder David Peralta did all the small things Wednesday that help add up to a victory. The left-handed hitter drew a career-high three walks — all in his first three plate appearances — and then cracked his fourth double of the year to deep center. That means he got a hit in his only at-bat on the books in the series finale; he also scored three runs. Peralta also recorded the seventh outfield assist of his career by throwing out a runner at home in the sixth inning, and then he made an impressive leaping grab at the warning track to end the same inning.

First baseman Paul Goldschmidt went 3-for-4 on the night with one walk and one steal, his third game in the series with exactly three hits. The five-year pro became the first Diamondback with three or more hits in three straight games since Mark Reynolds in 2007. Goldschmidt also scored two runs in the game and knocked in his 20th RBI of the year. He is now batting .338 on the season after going 9-for-14 in the series against Colorado.

One right after recording his first RBI in the major leagues, third baseman Yasmany Tomas quadrupled that number with three runs batted in, including his first two-RBI hit. Both of the rookie’s hits came in his last two at-bats, and he finished the game 2-for-4, bumping his average to .333.

Lyles’ fifth inning was disastrous: He gave up two hits — including a homer — and three walks, and all five baserunners reached home. The Rockies starter was doing OK with four hits and two runs allowed before that point, but the fifth frame would be his last. The 29-year-old right-hander fell to 2-2 on the year after giving up season highs of eight hits, seven runs, six earned runs and one home run. His five walks also tied a season high, and his one strikeout and five innings pitched were his lowest marks of the year. The five-year pitcher’s ERA ballooned from 2.92 to 4.25 with the rough performance.

The lone home run of the night came from a rare source: D-backs backup catcher Jordan Pacheco. The five-year veteran’s fifth-inning dinger gave him three RBI on the night — his personal best as a D-back — and was the ninth of his career.

Despite striking out twice, the 29-year-old catcher had his first multi-hit game of the season, finishing the night 2-for-4 and improving his batting average to .250.

Mark Trumbo, along with Goldschmidt and several other D-backs, had a strong series against Colorado. The outfielder went a modest 1-for-4 in the series finale, but he finished the three-game set 7-for-12 with one homer, five RBI, four runs scored and one walk. One of those RBI came Wednesday in the opening inning, giving Trumbo 11 on the season, which is second on the D-backs. The 29-year-old right-handed hitter is now batting .319 on the year.

Just a few days after managing just two total runs in a three-game weekend set against Pittsburgh, the D-backs notched a whopping 25 runs in three matchups with Colorado, their highest mark in any series this season — even counting the four-games they split in San Francisco while putting a total of 22 runs on the scoreboard. Arizona’s series win over the Rockies was just the team’s second of the season.

Baseball games during a weekday can be a tough draw, and despite the D-backs’ offensive outburst the previous night, they only drew 19,633 fans to Chase Field in the series finale. Some Twitter users cracked that the stadium looked similar to the Baltimore Orioles and Chicago White Sox game at Camden Yards earlier in the day, but the D-backs ended up giving those select fans quite a show with the blowout win.
