Spencer Torkelson led off the 2020 MLB Draft, putting Arizona State’s baseball program in a historic light. Drafted first overall by the Detroit Tigers, he became the Sun Devils’ fourth ever No. 1 pick, an NCAA record for a single school.
He wasn’t the only draft pick out of the state of Arizona on Day 1 of the draft.
Nick Gonzales, who played in college at New Mexico State, hails from Cienega High School in Vail, Ariz.
Torkelson’s teammate Alika Williams was selected 37th overall, which was a competitive balance round A selection, by the Tampa Bay Rays. That meant ASU players led off and wrapped up the first day in the 2020 draft.
Here’s a look at other players drafted over the last two days who went to high school or college in the state of Arizona.
