With the Toronto Blue Jays facing the Miami Marlins on Tuesday, two of the Arizona Diamondbacks’ players dealt before Monday’s trade deadline passed would face off in Toronto’s Robbie Ray and Miami’s Starling Marte.

Well, at least the teams would, but no one could have expected the two would actually have a matchup against each other.

With the Blue Jays using opener Julian Merryweather, they turned to Ray after two innings. The fourth batter he would face in the third inning would be the Marlins’ two-hitter starting in center field: Marte.

Marte struck out on three pitches, fouling off a fastball before swinging and missing on Ray’s signature slider and watching another be strike three.

In an amusing turn of events given the way Ray’s season went in Arizona, walking 31 batters in 31.0 innings, all 12 pitches the left-hander threw in that inning were strikes. One of those was a solo homer hit by Miami third baseman Jon Berti.

Marte went on to hit the game’s go-ahead homer in the eighth.

Elsewhere, Archie Bradley threw his first major league pitch not as a member of the D-backs after being traded to the Cincinnati Reds.

In relief, Bradley took over in the third inning after starter Sonny Gray got lit up for six earned runs in two innings, and Gray’s relief after that Lucas Sims allowed three more runs to get across.

And wouldn’t you know it, with it being against the St. Louis Cardinals, the first batter Bradley faced was none other than Paul Goldschmidt.

Bradley got the best of Goldy, striking him out on three pitches, all fastballs.
