Utility man Roberts taking day-by-day approach

For someone who only has 14 home runs in his career, having two in one game is a big deal.

Even after going yard twice Tuesday night against the Reds, Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Ryan Roberts hasn’t argued for more playing time or more opportunities. Instead, he’s just taking it one day at a time.

“I just try to take advantage of each at-bat I get,” Roberts said as a guest on Sports 620 KTAR’s Doug and Wolf Wednesday morning. “Each day is a new day. Whatever Gibby says, I just go with that.”

For someone who wasn’t even supposed to be in the lineup for Tuesday’s game, Roberts made his presence known and his bat is saying more than he is willing to. Despite batting .509 during spring training, he wasn’t guaranteed a roster spot and is still only used as a reserve when starters like Kelly Johnson or Melvin Mora need a break.

D-backs manager Kirk Gibson is going to find it hard to ignore Roberts’ hot hand for the foreseeable future.

“[I’ll play] anywhere in the lineup,” Roberts said.
