Gonzo thinks D-backs could add a bat

Earlier this week ESPN analyst Buster Olney suggested the Arizona Diamondbacks might be looking to make a deal. Now someone within the organization’s front office acknowledges they could benefit from making a trade before the deadline.
Former D-back great and current special assistant to the President & CEO Luis Gonzalez made it clear Thursday morning that he’d like to see general manager Kevin Towers pursue another bat to add to their lineup.
“If we can add one more bat,” Gonzalez told Sports 620’s Doug and Wolf. “Maybe a third baseman, a power hitting third baseman. Not to say [Melvin] Mora’s not a bad fix over there. He’s good for us but at the same time he moves the ball around, sprays it around but you’d like to have one more guy with some thump in the lineup that’s a potential homerun threat when he comes to the plate. That only makes your lineup stronger.”
The ultimate decision on whether to make a trade or not will rest with general manager Kevin Towers but it is interesting to hear someone with pull in the organization admit they could stand to add a player to improve their chances in the NL West.
Mora has done an admirable job holding down the fort at third but if they want to remain in contention, an upgrade at the position that can offer more power is probably a must. In 103 at bats as a Diamondback Mora has hit as many home runs as Gonzo this season, zero. When you take into consideration that he hasn’t hit more than eight in his previous two years, you can understand why an upgrade at a position that usually provides a great deal of power for teams is in need.
