Inside the Box: Collmenter’s Michigan return bittersweet

After every Arizona Diamondbacks game we’ll examine the
box score and provide you with instant analysis. So it’s
time to go Inside the Box for June 25, 2011: Tigers 6, Diamondbacks 0

The Good:

The D-backs did manage to threaten in the eighth inning, though nothing came of it. After a Miranda walk and a Parra double, the D-backs had runners on second and third with no outs. However, Detroit started Justin Verlander threw three straight strikeouts after that to retire the side.

The Bad:

Josh Collmenter may have gotten a standing ovation or two and had many fans from his hometown of Homer, M.I. in the crowd, but he didn’t throw his best. In only six innings, Collmenter gave up five earned runs on 10 hits. He may have struck out four, but that wasn’t enough.

Collmenter didn’t get any run support, which didn’t help things. The D-backs only managed to get five hits all game. We’re not sure if they’re recent hot streak is cooling or Verlander was that good for the Tigers, but the D-backs, with their 14 strikeouts, fanned so many pitches the ball got a cold.

The Ugly:

The D-backs struck out 14 times. Need we say more?
