ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

D-backs’ success could work against them at the box office

The Arizona Diamondbacks have a seven game lead over the San Francisco Giants.

While that is great for them on the field, it may work against them at the Chase Field box office.

After all, with NFL starting, Arizona State hosting Missouri and Arizona visiting Oklahoma State, fans may be inclined to gravitate towards the drama of the gridiron over the final games of a pennant race that is all but won.

“I think they’re their own worst enemy,” Arizona Sports 620’s Chris Hamblin said. “If they were a game and a half up or a half a game up or two games up there would be a little bit more drama going on right now in terms of people wanting to pay attention to them and follow them in a pennant race.”

Chances are the D-backs will take the trade-off, but maybe that shouldn’t matter. Maybe, as Arizona Sports 620’s Doug Franz said, people should go and celebrate a good baseball team.

“They just took four of six games from divisional opponents,” Arizona Sports 620’s Doug Franz said, noting there will probably be fewer than 20,000 fans at Thursday’s game.

On the bright side, the D-backs can probably expect good crowds over the weekend, especially as the team honors the 2001 World Championship squad.
