Gibson wants Hudson to show composure on the mound

PHOENIX – Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Daniel Hudson has had a phenomenal year in his first full season in the Major Leagues, but he’s still learning how to stay even-keeled on the mound.

Hudson struggled to find his command against the Pirates on Tuesday and was noticeably flustered.

“He does get frustrated. He’s a perfectionist. He wants to carry his team, but to put all that on yourself, it’s not the easiest environment to succeed,” said manager Kirk Gibson on the Arizona Sports 620’s Burns and Gambo show on Wednesday.

The D-backs manager believes Hudson will perform better when he doesn’t have his best stuff if he can keep his composure on the mound better.

“He’s had a couple games where he’s fought himself. It’s like trying to beat your head against the wall and make quality pitches,” said Gibson.

Still, Gibson sees Hudson’s emotional demeanor on the mound as just part of his progression to becoming a Major League pitcher.

“He’s pretty darn good for where he’s at in his career. I’m sure he’ll learn to keep his composure a little more and not fight himself so much,” said Gibson.
