Daniel Hudson ‘felt fine’ despite results

The early part of spring training is all about players
working kinks out and playing their way back into shape.
So if you get roughed up a little bit in your Cactus
League debut, so be it.
That was certainly the case with Arizona Diamondbacks
right hander Daniel Hudson who toed the rubber in a game
situation for the
first time this spring in a 6-5 loss to the Colorado
Rockies at Salt River Fields.
Hudson faced 10 batters over two innings, giving up 4 hits
and 3 runs (2 earned) while striking out 1. Nolan Arenado
and Jonathan Herrera each had run-scoring doubles off of
Hudson in
the second inning for the Rockies.
“I felt fine” Hudson said. “Obviously the results weren’t
there but in the first outing you’re basically looking for
no pain and a lot of strikes, so that’s basically what I
felt out there.”
Hudson did a decent job of keeping the ball down, inducing
five ground ball outs of the six batters he retired,
although he feels he could have done better in that area.
“It was okay,” Hudson said of his command. “I left a
couple pitches up in the zone.”
Hudson’s manager wasn’t all that concerned about his line,
either.
“First time in the stadium, he probably overthrew it a
little bit,” Kirk Gibson said. “He threw actually too
many strikes and threw some pitches where he didn’t want
them, but the ball came out of his arm very, very well.”
Lefty reliever Joe Paterson was the only other pitcher
expected
to make the opening day roster that threw against Colorado
Monday. Paterson pitched a clean 5th inning, striking out
two of the three batters he faced.
