A closer look: D-backs cough up big lead in loss

Sure, you could read the box score and know who won, but
we
all
know that won’t tell you everything that happened in a
baseball
game. So, we will give you a closer look, providing you
with the
analysis, quotes and notes from the D-backs’ July 19 loss
to the
Reds. Final
score: Reds 7, Diamondbacks 6.

The Good:

The Diamondbacks jumped out on top of the Reds early
behind home runs from Aaron Hill and Henry Blanco. In
total, Arizona collected 14 hits on the day.

The Bad:

Where do we start?

Giving up a six-run lead is never a good thing and
responsibility for such an occurrence falls on many
different people.

Reliever Bryan Shaw will shoulder much of the blame — and
rightfully so — as he allowed four runs (two earned) in
just one-third of an inning. An error by first baseman
Paul Goldschmidt did not help things, either.

He Said It:

“It’s definitely up there as one of the worst,” team
president Derrick Hall told Arizona Sports 620’s Doug and
Wolf about the loss.

Noted:

The Diamondbacks leave Cincinnati with a four-game split,
and finish their road trip with a 2-5 mark.

Coming Up Next:

The Diamondbacks return home to begin a series with the
Houston Astros Friday. Trevor Cahill (7-8, 3.71 ERA) will
be opposed by Bud Norris (5-7, 4.70 ERA).
