A closer look: D-backs surrender five run lead in loss to Marlins

Aug 22, 2012, 4:52 AM | Updated: 5:09 pm

Sure, you could read the box score and know who won, but we all know that won’t tell you everything that happened in a baseball game. So, we will give you a closer look, providing you with the analysis, quotes and notes from the D-backs’ August 21 loss to the Marlins. Final score: Marlins 6, Diamondbacks 5.

The Good:

The Diamondbacks jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, scoring all five runs in the first inning. That is the first time the D-backs have scored five runs in the first since September 24th, 2011 against the Giants in a 15-2 win.

The Bad:

The Diamondbacks have now lost five of their last six games at Chase Field and they are 9-18 in one-run games.

Noted:

Some parts of the bullpen did their job. David Hernandez pitched a solid eighth inning and has now recorded a strikeout in a career-high 14 straight games. That is the longest streak by a Dbacks reliever since Juan Cruz from August 29th, 2006 to June 12th, 2007.

J.J. Putz came in to pitch the ninth and he has now recorded 19 straight scoreless appearances in 18.2 innings pitched.

He said it:

“They left 15 guys on and they were all over us the whole game. I’ll give them some credit but I think we’re better than that,” manager Kirk Gibson said after the game. “It’s just very disappointing. It’s kind of like, it’s time to check yourself.”

Coming up:

The Diamondbacks will play the Marlins in a double-header at Chase Field tomorrow. It’s the seventh time since 2000 that a double-header will be played in a domed or retractable roof stadium.

This is the first ever double-header for the Dbacks at Chase Field.

Tyler Skaggs will come up from Triple-A Reno and start in the first game at 12:40pm on Wednesday. He was a healthy scratch on Sunday for Reno. Skaggs is 9-6 with a 2.87 ERA with 116 strikeouts in 122.1 innings between Double-A and Triple-A.

Wade Miley will start the second game tomorrow against the Marlins. He’s 13-8 on the season with a 2.96 ERA. Miley won his last start on August 17th against the Astros. He allowed one earned run in six innings of work.
