Sure, you could read the box score and know who won, but we all know that won’t tell you everything that happened in a baseball game. So, we will give you a closer look, providing you with the analysis, quotes and notes from the D-backs’ September 20 win against the Padres. Final score: Padres 6, Diamondbacks 5.

The Good:

Justin Upton came a home run shy of the cycle, as he had a single, a double and a triple in the ballgame. The D-backs right fielder also scored two runs in the contest.

In the seventh inning Adam Eaton hit his first career home run, barely getting the ball over the right field fence. Eaton still ran the bases at top speed, “I’m 5’8″, I don’t hit too many. So if I hit one, I’m not going to stop and look at it,” he said after the game.

The Bad:

Tyler Skaggs struggled again on the mound in this game, allowing four runs in five innings of work.

Brad Bergeson came in to pitch the sixth inning for the D-backs and allowed three hits and two runs in that frame.

Arizona had the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the ninth on Thursday, down by one. They failed to score and fell short 6-5.

Noted:

Miguel Montero has caught 18 consecutive games for the D-backs, which extended his franchise record.

He Said It:

“I think they all deserve the chance to fail.” – Kirk Gibson when discussing his starting pitchers. He went on to say that failure is part of the game, and it is how you grow as a player, so that is why he says chance to fail instead of chance to succeed.

Up Next:

The Diamondbacks head up to Colorado to take on the Rockies in a four-game series. Wade Miley (15-10) faces Drew Pomeranz (1-9) on Friday.
