Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Carson Kelly has been placed on the injured list, manager Torey Lovullo said during his pregame media availability on Saturday.

Kelly took a foul ball off his left big toe in the first inning of Thursday’s game and suffered a chip fracture. He finished that game but did not play Friday.

He will be evaluated in 10 days, Lovullo said.

Daulton Varsho will get the start at catcher in his spot on Saturday against the Washington Nationals. This will be Varsho’s first start at catcher this season.

Right-handed pitcher Chris Devenski was placed on the 60-day disabled list due to right elbow inflammation.

Lovullo said the elbow was affecting him on Saturday, so he is getting imaging done.

J.B. Bukauskas was placed on the 10-day IL with a right elbow flexor strain. Kole Calhoun was moved to the 60-day DL with a strained left hamstring.

Infielder Domingo Leyba, relief pitcher Yoan Lopez and left-handed pitcher Joe Mantiply have been recalled to the D-backs.

Ketel Marte

Diamondbacks star Ketel Marte played a six-inning simulated game against the Colorado Rockies on Saturday. Lovullo said he “looked very good” in the game.

He played center field and got some at-bats.

“We were all very encouraged by what we saw,” Lovullo said.

The D-backs are hoping to get Marte to Triple-A Reno for live game action. They must first evaluate how his body feels after the sim game on Saturday before making the decision.

Marte will have an off-day Sunday before the team evaluates him.

Lovullo was unsure how many games Marte would play in Reno once he arrives.

The center fielder/second baseman has played only six games for the D-backs this season due to a right hamstring strain.

Taylor Widener

Right-handed pitcher Taylor Widener threw a 30-pitch bullpen session. He is scheduled to go to Reno on Tuesday as the team hopes to ramp him up to around 75 pitches.

If Widener can reach that point, Lovullo is confident that he can be ready for a full outing and return to the D-backs soon.

“I feel comfortable thinking that if we can get him into that 90-pitch range for his big-league return, we’ll be in good shape,” Lovullo said.

Widener has a 2.82 ERA in 22.1 innings over four appearances this season, all of which were starts.
