D-backs rough up Giants’ Vogelsong, clinch series victory: By the Numbers

The San Francisco Giants are simply having trouble getting hits off Arizona Diamondbacks pitchers.

After managing just three hits in a series-opening loss, the Giants’ offense struggled once again at home against Arizona on Saturday.

Allen Webster was recalled by Arizona earlier in the day, and he made his team and National League debut hours later at AT&T Park. The 25-year-old right-hander was stellar through five innings for the Diamondbacks, walking two while not allowing a single hit in that span.

Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong was not nearly as impressive, especially in the first inning. The 37-year-old Vogelsong allowed six hits and four earned runs on the day while lasting just 3.2 innings. The Diamondbacks had a 4-0 lead when Vogelsong was replaced by Yusmeiro Petit.

San Francisco finally got to Webster in the sixth inning for a couple of hits and runs, but Andrew Chafin came in with two outs and ended the home team’s run.

Arizona held on for its second straight win, a 4-2 decision which ensures a D-backs series victory. The D-backs climbed to 29-32 while knocking San Francisco down to 34-29, second in the National League West.

The two clubs will face off once more — early Sunday afternoon — at AT&T Park before going their separate ways.

Here’s a look at Saturday’s D-backs win, by the numbers:

While Vogelsong struggled mightily against Arizona, Petit, an occasional starter, came in and followed up with 2.1 innings of scoreless, hitless ball while striking out four. You may remember Petit for the one-run complete game he threw against the Diamondbacks late last season. The 30-year-old pitcher threw just 23 pitches in his extended work out of the bullpen Saturday.

After Chase Anderson had a no-hitter going through 6.1 innings Friday, the Giants failed to record a hit against Webster through the first 5.1 frames in their latest loss. Joe Panik finally broke the ice for the home team, one batter after Webster recorded his third walk of the day. The Giants have tallied just six hits in these last two losses against Arizona.

The Diamondbacks have been dominant at AT&T Park so far this year. With Saturday’s victory, the D-backs have won three in a row and five out of six overall at the California venue, outscoring the Giants 26-9 in the five games they’ve won. Last season, Arizona went just 3-6 on the road against the eventual World Series champions.

Although there’s one game left to play, Arizona secured its ninth series victory of the year Saturday. Despite their losing record, the D-backs actually have more series wins than losses; their overall series record currently is 9-8-3.

Webster retired a whopping 14 straight Giants batters at one point, stretching from the first inning to one out in the sixth. The D-backs starter ended up going 5.2 innings with two hits and two earned runs allowed while striking out two and walking three. The performance was good enough to earn him a victory in his first National League start. His ERA stands at 3.18 after his first game with the D-backs.

David Peralta had one of the better games among D-backs batters. One of his two hits nearly went out of the park in center field, and he finished the day 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. It was the outfielder’s first multi-hit game since June 3 against Atlanta. The second-year pro is now tied with A.J. Pollock for the second-most RBI on the team with 28. Pollock (2-for-5) and Paul Goldschmidt (2-for-4, one RBI, one run) were the only other players in the game to register more than one hit.

Vogelsong tossed a whopping 39 pitches during a whirlwind visitor half of the first inning. The Giants veteran struggled with control, walking four batters. He faced the entire D-backs batting order in the frame, and he needed the pitcher to fly out with the bases loaded to end the threat. Arizona tallied two hits and three runs before the Giants even went to bat. Vogelsong (4-5), like Webster, ended up throwing 81 pitches in the game, but the Giants starter went exactly two innings fewer than that of the D-backs.
