Arizona Diamondbacks analyst Bob Brenly announced on Thursday that he will be taking a voluntary leave of absence from Bally Sports Arizona.

The former D-backs manager told The Athletic‘s Zach Buchanan he will be taking sensitivity training after his “durag” comment on Tuesday toward New York Mets pitcher Marcus Stroman, who deemed Brenly’s words to have “racist undertones.”

“I want to apologize again for my insensitive reference on Wednesday, as it does not reflect my values or who I am. … Beginning today, I have voluntarily decided to take some time off to listen, reflect and devote my attention to awareness training related to diversity and inclusion to enhance my understanding and appreciation of others. I plan to return to the booth next homestand, hopefully a better person.”

Brenly also issued an apology on Wednesday, calling his comment “insensitive.”

“Pretty sure that’s the same durag that Tom Seaver used to wear when he pitched for the Mets,” Brenly said toward Stroman during Tuesday’s 6-5 D-backs win in 10 innings.

After learning of Brenly’s comments, Stroman — who is Black — tweeted after the game: “Onward and upward…through all adversity and racist undertones. The climb continues through all!”

The pitcher also retweeted several responses, some in support, others with racist taunts.

Stroman has been outspoken about racial and social justice issues, particularly after the death of George Floyd at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis.
