Padres deal D-backs 8-1 drubbing: By the Numbers

0-9 is now the Arizona Diamondbacks’ record this season in their attempts to reach .500 following the 8-1 drubbing they received at the hands of the San Diego Padres Saturday night at Chase Field.

The game started out promising enough, as D-backs starter Robbie Ray struck out two and forced a ground out to cap off a 1-2-3 first inning for Arizona. That would be about as encouraging as things would get for the D-backs, however, as Ray would go on to surrender six hits and four runs (three earned) over the ensuing 4.2 innings to suffer his second loss of the season.

On the other hand, the Padres received a tremendous pitching effort from starter Tyson Ross. Despite entering the game with a 3-7 record, Ross would dominate the D-backs lineup, allowing four hits and one earned run en route to his fourth win of the season and his third complete game of his career.

The night was also underscored by a trade that sent the D-backs’ Twitterverse into a tizzy, as the team announced that they had traded pitcher Bronson Arroyo and last year’s first round draft pick Touki Toussaint to Atlanta for Braves infielder Phil Gosselin.

Though it was an ugly night for the D-backs on the diamond, D-backs catcher Welington Castillo continues to rake at home as of late. Following his 1-for-3 performance versus San Diego with an RBI double, Castillo is batting .364 (4-for-11) with two doubles, one home run, three RBI and three runs scored during the current homestand.

Ray’s streak of four straight starts allowing two runs or less was snapped Saturday night at Chase Field. The streak had been the third-longest by a pitcher in D-backs history.

Saturday’s loss also snapped Arizona’s four-game winning streak versus divisional opponents. The D-backs are 8-7 at home and 17-16 overall against NL West foes this season.

Entering the day leading the National League in runs scored this season, the one run posted by the D-backs Saturday night enabled the Washington Nationals to leapfrog Arizona for that title. The D-backs have scored 300 runs this season.
