Arizona Diamondbacks infielder/outfielder Seth Beer is having surgery Thursday on his left shoulder, manager Torey Lovullo said on Tuesday.

Beer dislocated the shoulder on Sept. 14 while diving for a ball on defense. He exited the game and landed on the 10-day injured list three days later.

“It’s a very unfortunate situation for Seth,” Lovullo said. “He was going hard after a baseball. He attacked the baseball the way we wanted him to, just unfortunately dove in the wrong place at the wrong angle and put a little too much pressure on certain parts of that left shoulder.”

Lovullo didn’t have specifics on what the exact surgery was or the timeline, but said Beer’s recovery will be more like months instead of weeks and the surgery will address the instability of the joints in that left shoulder. The manager couldn’t say if Beer would be ready for spring training. The D-backs’ first Cactus League game is roughly five months away from the time of Beer’s surgery.

Beer, 25, made his major league debut in early September and hit a pinch-hit solo homer in his first career at-bat. In the first two full starts Beer got to make before getting injured, he was 3-for-7 from the plate with a double, two RBIs and a walk.

The first baseman and outfielder known for his bat is the 12th-ranked prospect in the Diamondbacks’ farm system, according to MLB Pipeline. The 2018 first-round pick by the Houston Astros was acquired from Houston as a part of the Zack Greinke trade in July of 2019.
