Budda Baker explains cryptic tweet during Jacoby Brissett’s holdout

The Arizona Cardinals and quarterback Jacoby Brissett have been in a contract dispute this offseason, and when it led to Brissett holding out of voluntary organized team activities and not participating in June’s mandatory minicamp, safety Budda Baker took to social media to voice his frustrations.

“Just want bro to get his shit done… he is not asking for what you think. Bro is asking for below the bare minimum. Let’s just get it done!!!” Baker wrote on July 9.

Fast forward to training camp, Brissett showed up Wednesday with the rest of the veterans, and head coach Mike LaFleur said Thursday the Cardinals quarterback will be practicing.

Baker also spoke with the media for the first time since he posted on X regarding Brissett’s contract situation.

“Getting towards camp, I’m getting a little itchy and some things were slightly said,” Baker told reporters Thursday with a smile. “That’s just how I am. I just want everyone to be on the field. If you’re signed with the Arizona Cardinals, be on the field … at the end of the day, you’re only gonna get better by practicing.”

Baker gave further explanation, saying he simply wants his teammates to get paid what they deserve and for everyone to practice together so they can get better.

“At the end of the day, I want all of our players to get theirs and ultimately all of our players to be in the building, being able to practice (and) being able to get better because you only get better by practicing,” Baker said. “I didn’t know that Jacoby was practicing today, but that’s a great thing and definitely excited for not only Jacoby but all the quarterbacks that come in — first week of training camp, get their feet wet and continue to get better.”

The eight-time Pro Bowler ended on a more light-hearted note.

“Hopefully he’s with the 1s so I can pick him off. I’m just a competitor at heart,” Baker said grinning.

While LaFleur said Brissett is practicing, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday there is “nothing new as of right now on his contract.”

How did we get here with Jacoby Brissett?

The 33-year-old veteran is seeking a revised contract after stepping in as the starter last season following the departure of Kyler Murray. Brissett is currently scheduled to earn up to $5.39 million in 2026, but only $1.5 million of his base salary is guaranteed.

His current deal sits below market rate for an NFL starter and trails the contract of backup Gardner Minshew II, who signed this offseason on a deal featuring higher guaranteed pay.

While both sides reportedly agree Brissett deserves a raise, they have yet to close the gap on financial terms.

Despite the ongoing dispute, Brissett spent part of the summer hosting private workouts in South Florida with key playmakers, including tight end Trey McBride and wide receiver Michael Wilson, both of whom turned in career years with Brissett under center last season.
