ASU legend Danny White holding pickleball tournament benefitting Pat Tillman Foundation

TEMPE — Legendary Arizona State and NFL quarterback Danny White is giving back to the Pat Tillman Foundation with a Valley pickleball tournament and silent auction.

It’s a two-day tournament Sept. 25-26 at The Picklr in Mesa, with each segment of both days broken up into segments by age.

• morning of Sept. 25: seniors (ages 50 and up)
• evening of Sept. 25: all ages
• morning of Sept. 26: adults (ages 19-49)
• evening of Sept. 26: juniors (under 19)

Each age grouping is also broken up into three skill levels.

All registered players will receive a t-shirt as part of a “Swag Bag.”

“We are honored to announce that 100% of the tournament proceeds will go to the Pat Tillman Foundation, helping to empower military service members, veterans and spouses with academic scholarships and leadership development,” the event page said.

Danny White remains involved in ASU’s program

ASU was 32-4 over White’s three years as a starter (1971-73) under legendary coach Frank Kush with Fiesta Bowl wins in all three. He finished his college career leading the nation in passing touchdowns and coming in ninth in Heisman voting for the 1973 season.

He has stayed close to the program in recent years, often showing up to practices where he is seen interacting with current head coach Kenny Dillingham and the ASU quarterbacks.

“He is a big, big, vital icon in this program,” Dillingham said. “And he’s not just an icon for this program. He’s an icon in the NFL. He’s an icon for the Dallas Cowboys. And for him to want to be around and get involved is awesome. I meet with him every Sunday and he gives me some things of what he sees with the opponent.

“I love having him around and I’m glad he’s coming around more than he has in the past. It’s awesome to get our alumni engaged.”

White’s No. 11 is among the five numbers that ASU has retired. His father, Wilford White, has another retired number: No. 33
