Yikes.
The Arizona Cardinals didn’t get off to the cleanest of starts Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, but it could’ve been a lot worse.
Following two forced turnovers in the first half — one on a fumble recovery following a punt and another on a Tyrann Mathieu pick — the Cardinals settled for two field goals by Chandler Catanzaro. They were quite lucky that the Cat Man got the second attempt at all.
That’s because Arizona quarterback Carson Palmer threw up a gift to the 49ers’ secondary on a key third down. With no Arizona receiver within 10 yards, it was San Francisco’s Tramaine Brock who stood in the end zone ready to catch the easiest interception of his life — except he didn’t.
Brock simply dropped a floating Palmer pass, allowing the Cardinals to take a 6-0 lead on the next play rather than giving his San Francisco offense the ball at the 20-yard line.
The drop pretty much summed up the 49ers’ season to this point.
Arizona, which led just 6-3 at halftime, shouldn’t take the play for granted.
