Joey Porter may become a cap casuality

The new NFL salary cap will mean that some teams will have to spend money and others will have to save money.

While the Arizona Cardinals are $37.3 million under the salary cap, they may part ways with Joey Porter.

According to ESPN.com’s John Clayton, Porter may be one of many “cap casualties” once the lockout ends.

The one-year experiment with Porter wasn’t a success. The whole defense had a bad year. The Cardinals don’t need cap room, but this looks like a relationship ready to split. He would save the team $4.66 million if he’s cut.

The 12-year NFL veteran recorded 50 tackles and five sacks in his one year with the Cardinals. While his numbers were not bad, they were not great and it may make more sense for the Cardinals to cut the linebacker and save the money than to pay Porter for another average year.
