D-backs swept by Giants: By the numbers

Just as the Arizona Diamondbacks appeared on the positive track to solving one problematic area, another issue arose.

The D-backs lost their seventh home contest in a row and fifth consecutive game overall with a 2-1 loss Saturday to the San Francisco Giants as starting pitcher Rubby De La Rosa held up his end of the bargain.

The offense didn’t. Despite De La Rosa going 6.2 innings and allowing one hit — a solo home run — Arizona’s offense floundered against the Giants’ Matt Cain, not unlike it did all series long at Chase Field.

Looking forward to a home series against a 16-20 New York Yankees squad turns the page on the D-backs’ four-game series against San Francisco, but the results remain troubling for manager Chip Hale’s team.

Here are a few figures from the last four games to put that into perspective.

0

Brandon Drury had no runs scored and no RBI during the series, a shame considering he went 8-of-15 at the plate, plus walked once. He hit in the eight-, six- and two-hole (twice) in four games.

0.07

Paul Goldschmidt’s batting average. He recorded one hit and had a sac-RBI in the series. He scored one run himself but went 1-for-14 at the plate, striking out four times and walking twice.

0.129

Arizona’s batting average with runners in scoring position.

Among few positives for the offense, Chris Owings continued to swing the bat with success, going 6-of-15 with a double, a triple and two RBI against the Giants.

Of eight runs scored over four games, the D-backs only earned two with clutch two-out hitting. Both of those came in the series-opener, a 4-2 defeat.

The number of base-runners the D-backs stranded per game.

4.01

That’s the ERA of four starting pitchers who faced the Giants. Arizona’s starting pitchers have begun to steady their performances, at least relative to their rocky starts in the first month of the season.

By grounding into double plays nine times over four games, the Diamondbacks matched a club record for a series.
