ASU QB Threet retires over concussion issues

Feb 24, 2011, 12:00 AM | Updated: 4:00 am

TEMPE – Former Sun Devils starting quarterback Steven Threet has decided to give up playing football after suffering from post-concussion syndrome.

ASU confirmed the signal caller’s decision on Wednesday.

Threet, who would have been a senior this year, has suffered four concussions, three from last season, and is still experiencing headaches from the after effects.

Junior Brock Osweiler, who started the final two games for ASU last season, is now the clear front-runner to be the Sun Devils starting quarterback heading into this season.

ASU still has depth at the position with redshirt freshman Taylor Kelly and incoming freshmen Michael Bercovici and Michael Eubank.

Bercovici is already enrolled in school and will take part in spring practice, which begins March 22.

Threet will remain on scholarship and is expected to remain a part of the football program by serving as an assistant and working with the quarterbacks on the roster.

He threw for 2,534 yards with 18 touchdowns and 16 interceptions with a 62 percent completion rate last season where he started the majority of the Sun Devils games.

Last year was Threet’s first season at ASU after transferring from Michigan where he was their starter in 2008.
