Osweiler drinking on the job – to avoid cramping

Sep 5, 2011, 8:05 PM | Updated: 9:06 pm

Arizona State quarterback Brock Osweiler brought a friend with him Monday to his weekly press conference: a gallon of Cytomax sports performance drink, already half empty.

“I definitely thought I was hydrated,” he said looking back at Thursday’s game against UC Davis in which he twice cramped up on the field in the third quarter. “I drink at least two gallons a water a day on top of Gatorade and Cyotmax and everything else. But I’ve definitely upped that dose this week.”

“Instead of drinking two gallons of that water he’s drinking three this week, a day,” added head coach Dennis Erickson.

“Really the first time we’ve had cramps since I’ve been here. I’m not making excuses but that was hot,” Erickson said of the 104-degree temperature at kickoff. “You can drink as much water and Gatorade as you want and sometimes you’re just going to cramp up.”

ASU hopes that’s not the case this week against Missouri. The forecast Friday calls for a high of 102 and a 30% chance of rain, according to weather.com

“Missouri is not a very cool state either in the summer,” said Osweiler. “They’re used to the heat. They’re used to humidity so maybe the dry heat will play a factor but that’s nothing that we really pay attention to.”
