Dennis Erickson hoping for contract extension

Oct 25, 2011, 6:21 PM | Updated: 7:46 pm

Dennis Erickson’s team is having a banner year, and with
just one season remaining on his contract it would seem as
if the time is right for a contract extension.

A guest on Arizona Sports 620’s Burns and Gambo Tuesday,
the 64-year-old said he’d like to see happen.

“I’d like to be here for as long as I coach and there’s no
question about it, we’re going in the right direction and
are excited about the direction that we’re going in,” he
said. “Not just this year but the year after and the year
after.

“Of course, that’s what I signed on for when I got here
and I’d like to be here as long as I do a good job and I’m
healthy and all those things, which I feel great.”

Erickson’s record with ASU stands at 30-26, though at 5-2
(3-1) this season there’s a good chance his team will
represent the Pac-12 South in the league’s inaugural
championship game.

So, given the program’s momentum at a time when many other
Pac-12 schools are facing uncertainty, committing to the
coach may be the way to go.

“The sooner it can happen the better for recruiting,
there’s no question about it,” Erickson said. “That’s what
kids look at, that’s what people use for you or against
you in recruiting so yeah, the sooner the better, there’s
no question about it.”

And while Erickson thinks something will get done to keep
him in Tempe, he said now is not the time to worry about
it.

“We talked about it before the season a little bit, but
it’s not time to do that right now,” he said. “It’s time
to win football games and that’s all we can focus on.”
