D-Backs announce date for fifth annual Race Against Cancer

Jan 11, 2017, 1:29 PM

The D-Backs Race Against Cancer will start and finish at Chase Field.

The Arizona Diamondbacks announced Wednesday that they will host the fifth annual D-backs Race Against Cancer on Sunday, April 9. The event will feature a 1-Mile Banana Boat Family Fun Walk as well as a 5K race.

The proceeds generated by the event will go toward the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation, which will distribute the money among Arizona non-profits that provide screening, treatment and support to those who have been diagnosed with cancer.

The event is presented by the University of Arizona Cancer Center at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center.

Prizes for the 5K will be given out to the top three male and top three female contestants in eight different age groups, with the top overall male and female being given the opportunity to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before a Diamondbacks game. Last season, 29-year-old Kevin Kemmerle and 17-year-old Stephanie Stewart were the winners for their genders, with times of 15:21.9 and 18:37.5, respectively.

In addition, all participants will receive a T-shirt, drawstring bag, finisher medal and voucher for a game ticket to a D-backs home game.

The 5K will kick off at 7:15 a.m, while the 1-Mile will begin at 8:30 a.m. Both races will start and end at Chase Field.

Registration currently stands at $40 for the 5K and $20 for the 1-Mile, with the price for both going up by $10 after March 31.
