GLENDALE, Ariz. – Dislocated, not broken, and not expected to miss any regular season action. That is the word from the Arizona Cardinals regarding wide receiver Michael Floyd, who hurt several fingers on his left hand early in Wednesday’s practice.

The news is better than expected after initial reports had Floyd breaking three fingers and perhaps being sidelined for as long as six weeks.

“Mike is in great spirits,” receiver Larry Fitzgerald said.

Floyd, who has not missed a game in the three seasons since the Cardinals selected him out of Notre Dame with the 13th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, underwent surgery to fix three dislocated fingers he injured during a 1-on-1 passing drill near the start of practice.

His hand landed on the football, bending the fingers backward.

Floyd later shared pictures with his teammates.

“It’s one of those things that you just wished you hadn’t seen,” Fitzgerald said.

Head coach Bruce Arians called the injury “unique.”

“I’ve never seen that in 40 years,” he said.

Added Fitzgerald about the play, “All your momentum is going down to the ground — Mike is 225 pounds, running very fast, too.  The ball hit him in the wrong spot.

“You hear about those type of freak injuries happening from time to time.  I’m just happy it happened now and not Week 7.”

Though the Cardinals have not put a timetable on Floyd’s return, Arians answered “evidently” when asked if the season opener against the New Orleans Saints was a realistic possibility.

Until then, Arians said the plan is to bump everyone up the depth chart.

“It gives (those receivers) a great opportunity right now,” he said.  “All those guys are doing very, very well.  It’s going to be a good battle now to see how those 3, 4 and 5 shape out that were 4, 5 and 6.”

Receiver is one of the deeper positions on the Cardinals.

Floyd, Fitzgerald and John Brown are secure in their spots.  Jaron Brown appears likely to make the team, as well.  And then there are the likes of Brittan Golden, J.J. Nelson, Jaxon Shipley, Trevor Harman and Ryan Spadola.

“(Floyd’s injury) is going to give some other young guys an opportunity to show what they can do, and I think it will only make our core even deeper,” Fitzgerald said.  “Across the board, I think everybody is really doing well and showing flashes.”
