SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Captain Shane Doan practiced on Wednesday at the Ice Den and is expected to play Thursday in Dallas when the Coyotes face the Stars.
“We’ll see were he is in the morning but all indications are that he is fine,” coach Dave Tippett said. “He wants to play.”
Doan left Saturday’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers in the third period. Flyers defenseman Radko Gudas delivered a forearm to Doan’s head as Doan went to his knees and collided with the boards. Tippett believes there was intent to injure but Gudas faced no supplemental discipline and he was not penalized on the play.
“I tried to stop up and kind of got pushed from behind,” Doan said. “I slid into the boards and he came in to kind of finish the check and trying to make sure I didn’t get to the loose puck. I just bounced my head off the dasher.
“It just one of those fluke things that happens.”
Doan said he was fine and wanted to come back in the game in spite of the fact that he was a little wobbly and fell the first time he tried to get up off the ice.
“I had to kind of get my bearings for a second but it’s a physical game and that’s a part of the game,” he said.
Doan went through the league-mandated concussion protocols for the first time in his 20-year career over the last few days, including a baseline test and balance test.
“They deemed all that was fine,” Doan said.
DOMI A MASTERTON NOMINEE
Rookie Max Domi was nominated for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy by the Arizona chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association. The trophy recognizes perseverance, sportsmanship & dedication to hockey.
Domi has Type 1 Diabetes so he has to manage the disease, including on the ice. Aside from that daunting task, Domi has become a fan favorite and an active player in the community in his first NHL season.
“It was definitely a big step,” Domi said of managing all his responsibilities at the NHL level. “I’m still trying to work the kinks out but the training staff is a huge reason why I can do the things I do.”
Domi said he has enjoyed being an international spokesperson for his disease, particularly connecting with others who have it.
“With the platform that we’re lucky enough to have as a professional athlete, you just try to make the most of that,” he said. “You just try to be living proof that ‘hey, this is my dream to be in the NHL and I’m here now and most of the hard work was done while I was a Type 1 diabetic.’ It just goes to show you that you can do it, too.”
LOOSE PUCKS
— Tippett has not heard what sort of injury defenseman Michael Stone suffered to his left knee, or a timetable for his surgery and recovery. “I have an idea what it is but I haven’t been told exactly what it is or the details of what is going to happen. I think they’re just talking about making sure they have the exact diagnosis right.”
— The Coyotes recalled forward Eric Selleck from Springfield of the AHL. He has 10 goals and 22 points in 59 games with Springfield. The Coyotes signed him as a free agent last summer.
— Domi has the most multi-goal games (five) in a single season by a rookie in the franchise’s Arizona history.
— The Coyotes officially announced the signing of defenseman Kyle Wood to a three-year entry-level deal. The deal is for an annual average value of $717,500 according to generalfanager.com.
