Braden Shipley will fill the hole in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ rotation for injured starting pitcher Shelby Miller on Thursday. The team made the announcement Tuesday afternoon to prepare the 25-year-old righty for an appearance at the Washington Nationals.
Miller announced Saturday that he would undergo Tommy John surgery, ending his season. His replacement remained under wraps, though the D-backs did say over the weekend that it would not be Archie Bradley, who will remain in the bullpen.
Shipley made 13 appearances with 11 starts for Arizona a year ago, putting together a 4-5 record and 5.27 ERA.
For Triple-A Reno this season, Shipley owns a 3-1 record with a 4.18 ERA in five starts. Shipley has grown stronger as the season has gone on; he allowed six earned runs in his first outing, but that number dipped to three, two, two and zero earned runs, respectively, in his latest starts.
