Gambo: Cardinals had zero interest in free agent RB LeGarrette Blount

It would have made sense if the Arizona Cardinals had interest in free agent running back LeGarrette Blount.

Coming off a season in which he ran for 1,161 yards and led the NFL with 18 rushing touchdowns, the 30-year-old would have in theory been an excellent option for the team behind starter David Johnson.

It will not happen, of course, as Blount signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday. However, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Cardinals did have an offer to the running back on the table.

While that would have made sense, it looks like the Cardinals did not, in fact, want to bring the 6-foot-1, 245-pound Blount to Arizona.

The Cardinals do not necessarily have a great need at the position because of Johnson’s all-world ability, though the pecking order behind him is a bit murky.

As of now, Kerwynn Williams, Elijhaa Penny, T.J. Logan and undrafted rookie James Summers round out the depth chart, with Andre Ellington — who has played running back in his first four NFL seasons — transitioning to receiver.

In late March, Cardinals coach Bruce Arians expressed confidence in his running backs, which at the time did not include 2017 draft pick Logan or Summers, so perhaps it should not come as a shock that the team has not been antsy to shake up the group.
