Nick Davila threw for a season-high 411 yards and nine touchdown passes as the Arizona Rattlers stormed back into the win column with an easy 84-56 win over the Orlando Predators at Amway Center Saturday night.
Orlando rallied from an early two-touchdown deficit and tied the score at 21-21 when quarterback Aaron Garcia hit Jarvis Williams on a 42-yard scoring strike with 7:44 left in the second quarter. But from that point, the Rattlers (13-2) dominated. Davila hooked up with receiver Maurice Purify on three touchdown passes in a span of 5:34 of the second quarter and the Rattlers went to the locker room with a 42-28 lead.
Arizona stretched their lead on the first possession of the second half when Davila hit Tysson Poots, who made a great juggling catch, on a 26-yard touchdown pass.
Poots, Purify and Rod Windsor all had more than 100 yards receiving and three touchdown catches on the night.
On defense, the Rattlers weren’t able to sack Garcia, but they did intercept the AFL’s all-time leading passer three times — all by defensive back Virgil Gray, who has taken over the team lead with nine picks on the season.
The Rattlers’ 84 points marked the third time they’ve topped the 80-point plateau this season, and the first time they’ve done it on the road. In fact, this is the first time in team history that the Rattlers have scored 80 or more points in a game three times in a single season. They had only surpassed 80 points six times.
