WILMINGTON, N.C. (May 23, 2013) – The Wilmington Hammerheads broke a two-game losing streak in the league as they took a 2-1 victory against Phoenix FC on Saturday night at Legion Stadium. Jamel Wallace and Daniel Roberts scored for the Hammerheads, who took their third win of the season.
The Hammerheads jumped ahead early, taking the lead in the sixth minute as a long throw-in by Uriah Bentick was headed home by Jamel Wallace. The Wolves almost hit back immediately through Diego Faria, whose shot was turned wide by Phil Tuttle in the Hammerheads’ goal.
The Wolves were able to get back on even terms four minutes before the break, Donny Toia bursting through the Hammerheads’ defense before sending a low shot past the advancing Tuttle. The Hammerheads grabbed the lead back on the stroke of halftime, however, as Daniel Roberts scored his first goal for the club to give Wilmington a 2-1 lead.
The game became more physical in the second half, with a number of yellow cards being issued and few chances for either side. Phoenix pushed to get an equalizer, but the Hammerheads were able to control possession well at times to salt the game away, claiming all three points.
