High school cancer patient to serve as Boise State captain at Fiesta Bowl

Dec 31, 2014, 12:18 AM | Updated: 12:47 am

Boise State teamed up with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to make a high school fan’s dream come true on New Year’s Eve.

Hayden Adkins, a high-school sophomore and lifelong Broncos fan, has been named a Boise State honorary captain for the Broncos’ VIZIO Fiesta Bowl matchup with Arizona at University of Phoenix Stadium on Wednesday.

Adkins currently lives in Utah but was born in Boise, Idaho. He was diagnosed with soft tissue cancer in 2012 and completed chemotherapy in early December. Wednesday will be the first time he’ll take in a Broncos game in person.

He accompanied the team to its walk-through at University of Phoenix Stadium on Tuesday and had lunch with the team. He received his own set of Fiesta Bowl travel sweats, like the players, and will be introduced at the team’s pep rally Tuesday. He will be on the sideline during pre-game warm-ups Wednesday.

Boise State will play in its third Fiesta Bowl game in nine years Wednesday. The Broncos are 2-0 in their previous appearances.
