Major League Baseball named Diamondbacks ace Zack Greinke the National League Pitcher of the Month on Thursday after he piled up four wins in July.
Greinke went 4-0 in five starts last month with a 1.60 ERA and 0.89 WHIP. He allowed six earned runs over 33.2 innings pitched and struck out 35 batters to just five walks.
The right-hander’s best performance came on July 22 against the Colorado Rockies, when Greinke allowed two hits and an earned run over 8.0 innings to go with a season-high 13 strikeouts.
At the beginning of July, Greinke’s ERA sat at 3.41 but has decreased to 2.96 heading into August. Looking further back, the D-backs’ All-Star has gone 9-1 over the last two months after he ended May with two losses in a row.
Cleveland Indians infielder Jose Ramirez and St. Louis Cardinals infielder Matt Carpenter respectively won the AL Player of the Month and NL Player of the Month honors for July, while Boston Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale won the AL Pitcher of the Month award.
Greinke heads to the mound on Thursday against the San Francisco Giants, where he will square off against fellow ace Madison Bumgarner.
First pitch is at 6:40 p.m. and pregame coverage begins at 6 p.m. on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station.
