Eduardo Escobar’s walk-off home run lifts D-backs over Dodgers

The Diamondbacks had a 3-2 lead in the eighth inning. They went on to win the game.

The events in between on Tuesday were what made all the difference.

The D-backs were ahead by that one-run margin as Brad Boxberger, who had closed games for the team throughout the season but struggled down the stretch, was called upon to get the save. But a single by Enrique Hernandez led to a stolen base and an advancement to third on an errant throw, and a double by Chris Taylor tied things up.

But when Arizona got out of that inning and went to the bottom of the ninth, third baseman Eduardo Escobar took matters into his own hands.

Leading off the inning, Escobar drove a 3-2 Kenta Maeda pitch high in the sky and out into right field where Dodgers fans were sitting, giving the D-backs a 4-3 lead and ending the game.

With the win, the D-backs’ record improved to 80-78, and it meant the Dodgers were only 0.5 games up on the Rockies, who won on Tuesday.

Escobar was a key trade acquisition for the D-backs, who saw the 29-year-old hit .260 with seven home runs and 20 RBI since the trade from Minnesota, coming into Tuesday night’s game.

Arizona will look to win the series when they play Los Angeles at Chase Field once more on Wednesday.
