The Arizona Diamondbacks activated utility player Blake Swihart from the 60-day injured list, the team announced Wednesday.

The move was first reported by 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s John Gambadoro reports.

Swihart, who has been rehabbing in Triple-A from a right oblique strain, was on the 10-day IL but was recently moved to the 60-day IL.

Reports indicated Wednesday morning that relief pitcher Greg Holland, who had been the D-backs’ closer earlier in the season, was being designated for assignment. That move would clear a spot on both the 40-man and 25-man roster for Swihart.

The 27-year-old Swihart was hitting .141 in 64 at-bats with Arizona this year after coming over in a trade from the Red Sox, manager Torey Lovullo and GM Mike Hazen’s former employer.

For his career, Swihart is hitting .243 with 12 home runs and 67 RBIs in 233 major league games across five seasons.

He has played every position on a major league diamond except for center field, shortstop and pitcher.

The addition of Swihart and subtraction of Holland changes the equation of the D-backs’ number of position players and pitchers. Arizona was carrying 13 pitchers going into Wednesday, but that number will tick down to 12.
