NFL Draft: What history says about the 24th pick and what that could mean for the Arizona Cardinals

“And with the 24th selection of the 2015 NFL Draft, the Arizona Cardinals select…”

Nobody knows what NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will say to complete that sentence after the draft gets underway Thursday night in Chicago.

Hell, we don’t even know if the Cardinals will be selecting 24th overall. Just last year, general manager Steve Keim engineered a deal in which Arizona traded down seven spots to no. 27 overall, where they grabbed Washington State safety Deone Bucannon.

In the process, they also acquired an additional third-round pick from the New Orleans Saints (91st overall) and drafted game-breaking wide receiver John Brown.

Let’s assume the Cards stand pat at 24. What should they expect? Again, nobody knows. There have been plenty of players linked to the Cardinals in that draft position in mock drafts over the last few months.

But here’s a little primer on what’s happened with the 24th overall selection since 1970.
