The Arizona Diamondbacks have designated left-handed pitcher Matt Grace for assignment and sent first baseman Kevin Cron back to the alternate site, the team announced Thursday. In their place, the team is recalling right-handed pitcher Joel Payamps and infielder Andy Young.
Grace, 31, has made three appearances for the D-backs this year, pitching only one inning and allowing six earned runs. He pitched on Wednesday night in a loss to the Rockies, allowing three earned runs without recording an out. Grace previously pitched in 178 games over five seasons for the Nationals, recording a 4.57 career ERA.
Arizona had recalled Grace on Wednesday last week, the same day it placed lefty Andrew Chafin on the injured list with a sprained finger.
Payamps, 26, comes up in Grace’s place in the bullpen. He pitched briefly for the D-backs last year, allowing two earned runs in four innings of work.
Cron, meanwhile, had been brought up from the alternate site on Aug. 17 to replace Andy Young, who was sent down. Cron has since gone 0-for-13 with no walks and five strikeouts. Young now comes back up in his place.
When Young was with the D-backs’ big league roster earlier this season, he batted .286 with a home run and three RBIs. The 26-year-old made his MLB debut on Aug. 1 and is the No. 17 prospect in the D-backs’ system, according to MLB Pipeline.
The D-backs made these move in the midst of an eight-game losing streak. Arizona has lost by one run in three straight games entering Thursday.
