The Arizona Diamondbacks called up left-handed pitcher Travis Bergen on Thursday, the trade return from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for Robbie Ray.

General manager Mike Hazen said on Monday that Bergen is a player the D-backs front office has had an eye on for a few years and they nearly selected him in a Rule 5 draft.

Bergen first hit the majors in 2019 for the San Francisco Giants and struggled, giving up 12 earned runs in 19.2 innings.

Bergen’s contract expired with the Giants and he was a non-roster invitee to spring training by the Toronto Blue Jays in February. He was assigned to the team’s alternate training site in mid-July, and Bergen made only one appearance for Toronto this season.

Payamps was signed by the D-backs on a minor-league contract in 2015 after originally signing with the Colorado Rockies organization back in 2011. The right-hander didn’t reach the Triple-A level until 2017, and made his MLB debut with Arizona in 2019.

After two appearances last season, Payamps allowed two runs (one earned) in his first 2020 outing on Tuesday.
