The Arizona Diamondbacks will be without one of their star players as they try to right the ship of the abbreviated 2020 season.
The team announced Wednesday it has placed second baseman Ketel Marte on the 10-day injured list due to left wrist inflammation.
Per Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro, Marte felt some pain in his wrist while swinging from the left side of the plate, but there was no exact moment he injured it. Gambadoro added the team could platoon utility men Josh Rojas and Josh VanMeter in his absence.
D-backs manager Torey Lovullo told reporters pregame on Wednesday that Marte’s wrist had been bothering him for a couple days. They examined Marte Tuesday and discovered the inflammation.
The skipper added the D-backs want to get him back on the field before the end of the season if they can, and that’s the plan.
If he were to return after the 10 days are up, Marte could be back for the final eight games of the season.
The 26-year-old Marte is hitting .290 with two home runs and 14 RBIs in 40 games after making the All-Star in 2019. Marte’s 47 hits pace the team, while his 13 doubles rank second only to first baseman Christian Walker (14) for the team lead.
Arizona also optioned left-handed pitcher Joe Mantiply to the Alternate Training Site, and recalled right-hander Joel Payamps and VanMeter.
Payamps has made one appearance for the D-backs this season, allowing two runs over 2.0 innings.
VanMeter spent parts of the last seasons with the Cincinnati Reds. He hit .214 and recorded 56 hits, nine homers and 24 RBIs in 109 games. He joins the D-backs as a part of the Archie Bradley trade.
Mantiply has played in four games with Arizona this season.
