Kyler Murray’s chest bump with a Cardinals OL went horribly wrong

Oct 11, 2020, 10:38 AM | Updated: 1:28 pm

Kyler Murray got excited after Chase Edmonds’ big touchdown run for the Arizona Cardinals Sunday against the New York Jets, but offensive lineman Kelvin Beachum was just as excited.

After the score, Murray went for a celebratory chest bump with Beachum. As you could expect for a 207-pound quarterback meeting a 308-pound offensive lineman in the air, it did not go well for the quarterback.

Upon further review, this is all on Beachum. A chest bump is about gathering a few steps and then launching straight up into the air, meeting the teammate at the highest point. Think about it as the verticality rule in basketball. If the defender goes straight up, no foul. But if the defender jumps and is moving aerially in any direction, it’s a foul.

Foul on Beachum.

Along with him having too much momentum, Beachum took his jump right next to Murray, essentially shoulder-charging him in mid-air.

But credit Beachum for immediately picking up Murray and hoping no one noticed his big hit on the franchise quarterback.

Too bad the TV cameras are always on Kyler.

The Edmonds touchdown and another rushing score on the season for Murray, plus a Zane Gonzalez field goal to close the second quarter, had Arizona up 17-3 at the half. The Cardinals closed it out for a 30-10 win.
