The Arizona Diamondbacks and first baseman Kevin Cron have agreed to part ways after the 27-year-old spent part of two seasons in the desert.

Cron, an Arizona native from Mountain Pointe High School, batted .170 over 98 plate appearances in the big leagues with six home runs and 16 RBI.

According to Nick Piecoro of AZCentral.com, Cron’s rights have been released to a team from the Nippon Professional Baseball league in Japan.

Cron’s 2020 contract was for one year, $563,500, according to Spotrac.com. The D-backs have explored the possibility of reducing payroll for the upcoming 2021 season and this move could clear room for a prospect with a lower price tag.

Cron comes from a family of strong MLB pedigree as the brother of Detroit Tigers first baseman C.J. Cron and the son of Reno Aces manager Chris Cron.

In 2011, Cron was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the third round of the MLB Amateur Draft before opting to play college baseball at TCU. He was later drafted in the 14th round by the Diamondbacks in 2014.
