ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

Success for the Diamondbacks is ‘great for baseball’

The Arizona Diamondbacks are a great story.

The team has made a surprising run to the top of the NL West just one year after occupying the division’s basement and, while people have expected them to fall off by now, they show no signs of slowing down.

For a while it seemed nobody outside the state of Arizona knew what was going on in the desert, but a comeback win over Roy Halladay and the Phillies changed all that.

“It’s remarkable how baseball’s excited about the way the Diamondbacks are playing,” D-backs President Derrick Hall told Sports 620 KTAR’s Doug and Wolf. “Every owner, other than the Giants owner, is saying ‘We’re rooting for you, we’re pulling for you.'”

Hall, who is at the baseball owner’s meetings in Cooperstown, New York, said his team doing well is “great for baseball” and it’s hard to argue.

The Diamondbacks, after all, are not the Yankees or Red Sox. They’re not the Phillies.

They are a young team that is getting the job with a lower payroll, something that is not done nearly enough in the game today.

The D-backs having success shows that you don’t have to spend a fortune to field a winner, which should give confidence to other small-market teams around the country.
