If indeed the Diamondbacks are looking to upgrade their
third base situation, they may need look no further than
San Diego.
The Padres, who currently reside in their familiar spot in
the NL West’s basement, might look to trim some payroll
this summer. That could lead to them moving some decent
players, including third baseman Chase Headley.
Headley, who is hitting .273 with seven home runs and 31
RBI for the Padres, would be a good fit in Arizona, so
says ESPN MLB insider Tim Kurkjian.
“That would definitely be an upgrade for them, and I
wouldn’t be surprised if they go after that,” Kurkjian
told Arizona Sports 620’s Burns and Gambo Wednesday.
Kurkjian noted how the 28-year-old Headley’s numbers may
be tempered some
by the fact that he plays half his games in pitcher-
friendly PetCo Park,
where Headley has hit .250 with just
two home runs. In comparison, he’s hitting .302 with five
home runs in the road.
“They’re going to have to get a lot back in return, and
whether the Diamondbacks are willing to do that I’m just
not sure,” Kurkjian said.
