July 24, 2012: Kevin Kolb takes early lead

FLAGSTAFF — It’s not the only question the Cardinals face as they open training camp. But it is the biggest.

“Well, you know it’s coming,” head coach Ken Whisenhunt said after he was asked if he was ready for the daily questions about the quarterback competition between Kevin Kolb and John Skelton.

“So, we’ll just handle it how we’ve always done that,” Whisenhunt continued. “You ask the question. I’ll give you the best answer I can.”

The final answer won’t be known for weeks, perhaps not even until the week of the season opener against Seattle September 9.

Until then, it’s a competition.

And after day one, Kolb is in the lead.

Kolb beat Skelton in granting the first training camp interview.

Oh, there will be more—plenty more, but it was Kolb who was the lucky one to be surrounded by reporters Tuesday afternoon.

“I’ve said it a thousand times that that’s part of being in the NFL,” Kolb said of fighting for a job. “Adam (Snyder) and I were talking on the way over here, he’s never been into a season when he didn’t have to compete for his own job. Every player in the NFL is used to it. I’m used to it. I’m looking forward to doing my best.”

Kolb enters his second season with the Cardinals, his first though after a full offseason.

“It feels good to at least know the offense stepping in at this point,” he said. “I told you before it’s a slow soaking process throughout mini-camp and OTAs. I feel really good about the way things are going to go and have a good hunch about it.”

So, after day one it’s Kolb 1, Skelton 0.

(Full disclosure: Skelton was never spotted during the two-hour media availability for players as they checked-in. And in the spirit of competition, it was actually Rich Bartel who was the first of the team’s four quarterbacks to be seen.)
