Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Yasmany Tomás extended his hitting streak to 10 games and Nick Ahmed hit his second home run of the season, but it wasn’t enough to pull out pitcher Archie Bradley’s early deficit as the D-backs fell to the Cardinals 6-4 in St. Louis Tuesday night.

Tomás made an early impact with a two-run double in the top of the first, scoring Mark Trumbo and A.J. Pollock to give Arizona a 2-0 lead.

But Bradley just couldn’t get settled in. The rookie right-hander allowed six runs off five hits in just 3.2 innings pitched for his third consecutive tough start.

The Cardinals pulled to a 4-2 lead in the first inning. Ahmed’s solo homer helped the Diamondbacks to their third run in the second inning to cut the deficit to 4-3.

St. Louis’ Randal Grichuk answered with a homer of his own, and despite an RBI double from Tomas, Arizona couldn’t rally any further.

The D-backs’ loss cost them the series in St. Louis — here were the numbers:

10

Tomás extended his hitting streak to 10 games, and had two doubles and three RBI.

29

Tomás’ 29 hits are the most by a D-back rookie in May, bumping Didi Gregorius to second on the list. Gregorius had 27 hits in May of 2013.

14

In his three shaky starts after coming off the 15-day disabled list, Bradley has given up 14 runs over 10.2 innings. That’s an ERA of 11.81.

15

Pitcher Vidal Nuno was called up from Triple-A after Enrique Burgos was sent to the 15-day disabled list.

Nuño pitched 2.1 innings and allowed one hit. He also struck out five of six batters in the fourth to keep Arizona competitive after the Cardinals had scored their sixth run.

The Diamondbacks have lost eight of their last nine games against St. Louis. Their last win over the Cardinals came on September 27, 2014.
