Diamondbacks catcher Tuffy Gosewisch will have surgery on torn left ACL

Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Tuffy Gosewisch went down holding his left knee last Wednesday after trying to run out a grounder at first base in the sixth inning. He limped off the field under his own power with what the D-backs at the time called a “jammed knee”.

Gosewisch had an MRI Thursday, after which the D-backs called up catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia from Triple-A Reno. Gosewisch was placed on the 15-day DL, but it was officially revealed Tuesday that the D-backs starting catcher would have season-ending surgery on his torn left ACL.

Prior to his injury, the 31-year-old Gosewisch was hitting .211 with one home run and 13 RBI on the season. He also has played well defensively so far this season, and in the last month has thrown out nine of 18 attempted basestealers.

Saltalamacchia has been in the D-backs organization since signing with the team as a Minor League free agent on May 8.

In nine games for Triple-A Reno, the 30-year-old batted .188 with two home runs and seven RBI. He is a career .240 hitter with 90 home runs and 320 RBI over nine Major League seasons.
