ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

A closer look: D-backs beat Rockies with help from Kennedy’s bat

Jul 24, 2012, 4:34 AM | Updated: 6:09 am

Sure, you could read the box score and know who won, but
we
all
know that won’t tell you everything that happened in a
baseball
game. So, we will give you a closer look, providing you with
the
analysis, quotes and notes from the D-backs’ July 23 win over
the Rockies.
Final
score: Diamondbacks 6, Rockies 3.

The Good:

Arizona won its fourth straight with a 6-3 victory over the
Rockies at Chase Field on Monday night. The D-backs are also
finding their groove at home. This is now a seven game win
streak for them at Chase Field, their longest at home since a
15-game stretch from August 9th-September 10th, 2011.

The Bad:

Aaron Hill’s 13-game hitting streak came to an end. Hill was
0-for-4 with one strikeout. Manager Kirk Gibson did say
before the game Hill was one of the only guys that had not
had a day off because “he’s going really good right now.”

He Said It:

Starting pitcher Ian Kennedy on going Beast Mode to the
dugout when he got his bases-clearing triple.

“I always wanted to do it. There’s a bunch of guys that get
doubles in big situations, they do something. [Young] does
his little gun thing. I didn’t know what to do at the same
time. It was kind of like Talladega Nights, ‘I don’t
know what to do with my hands.’ It was fun.”

Noted:
Closer J.J. Putz converted his ninth straight save and has
now notched nine straight scoreless appearances in 10 innings
pitched.

Kennedy is the first D-backs pitcher to throw eight innings
in back-to-back starts this season, and he’s the first D-
backs pitcher to hit a bases-loaded triple.

Coming Up Next:

The D-backs host the Rockies in game two of this three-game
series on Tuesday at Chase Field. Left-handed pitcher Joe
Saunders will start for the Diamondbacks against a pitcher to
be announced. Southpaw Drew Pomeranz, who had been slated to
start for the Rockies on Tuesday, played catch on Monday
afternoon but will sit out Tuesday night with soreness in his
left arm. Saunders is 2-1 with a 3.79 ERA in his past three
home starts.
