Prospect Skaggs to make Diamondbacks debut

Aug 22, 2012, 1:22 AM | Updated: 1:22 am

Wednesday will be a day of firsts for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The team is not only hosting a doubleheader for the first time in franchise history, but will also give a top prospect his first big league start in the first game of the day.

“I follow the reports, every single day I read every one of them,” Gibson said of how Skaggs has been doing this season. “On all of his starts — up to his last start — he’d been pitching, trending real well.

“So he’s just kind of put it all together, can throw any pitch at any time.”

Skaggs, 21, was originally acquired in 2010 in a deal that saw the D-backs part with Dan Haren.

He will be the third of the D-backs’ top pitching prospects to make his major league debut this season, following Patrick Corbin and Trevor Bauer.

He may be the best of the bunch.

Skaggs boasts a 9-6 record with a 2.87 ERA in 22 starts for Double-A Mobile and Triple-A Reno this season, and has pitched well at every stop along the way in his professional career.

Talking about Skaggs with Arizona Sports 620’s Burns and Gambo Tuesday, D-backs GM Kevin Towers had nothing but praise for the pitcher.

“All along we’ve felt this guy is one of the best, it’s just a matter of time, when’s the right time to get him up here and get his feet wet,” Towers said. “Looking at what (Patrick) Corbin’s done up here, I’d be very surprised if he doesn’t match what Corbin’s done, and maybe even better.”
