With Suns in 1st, Devin Booker earns Western Conference weekly honor

Devin Booker closed out April well individually by averaging 29.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game over his last four outings.

After winning the Western Conference Player of the Month honor back in February, he’s stayed on the radar as one of the best players this season, and it’s only helped that his Phoenix Suns went 4-0 in the past week to shift into the NBA’s top spot by record.

All that was enough to make Booker the Western Conference Player of the Week award winner for games played from April 26 through May 2.

The Suns not only came out on the positive end of a tough schedule but did so by scoring efficiently against three top-10 defenses. NBA.com’s John Schuhmann notes that Phoenix scored 124 points per 100 possessions against the Jazz, New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers last week.

Booker shot 56% from the floor against those three teams before a 32-point outing on 50% shooting Sunday against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The award is Booker’s third for his career and this season after he earned the weekly nod in Feb. 8-14 and Feb. 22-28.

Boston Celtics swingman Jayson Tatum earned the Eastern Conference Player of the Week award, bolstering his case with a 60-point effort Friday in an overtime victory against the San Antonio Spurs.

Tatum’s big game helped him average 42.7 points, 6.0 assists and 6.0 rebounds per game, though the Celtics went 2-2.
